The Art & Soul of Glass Beads by Susan Ray, Richard Pearce	This is a terrific book for anyone who appreciates the art of lampworking, especially for those of us who collect these beautiful beads. There are short bios of the featured artists, along with examples of their work and tips for other lampwork artists. Being a collector of fine lampwork beads, I was delighted to see the faces and read the stories of so many talented artists I have come to "know" over the years. This book is a "must have" for bead lovers, jewelry designers, and lampwork connoisseurs, and would make a wonderful gift for anyone who appreciates glass artistry! Making Glass Beads by Cindy Jenkins	*From Library Journal* Beads have become so popular that entire shops are now devoted to selling beads and bead accessories. However, it is possible to make colorful beads of one's own from craft materials. Casey's beads are often humorous items made from glued strips of cloth, yarn, or paper and finished off with clear nail polish. Resembling polymer clay beads, they can be made in fantastic shapes and colors. The projects have detailed, step-by-step instructions with large enough illustrations to be used for children's as well as adult crafts. Jenkins's beads are little glass gems made using standard glassworking supplies and equipment such as a kiln and propane torch. She gives step-by-step instructions for plain glass, millefiori (thousand flowers), sculpted beads, and others. Photographs of museum-quality beads by other artists are interspersed throughout and provide an eye-opening look at the bead as art. Both books are welcome additions to craft collections. Kiln Firing Glass: Glass Fusing Book One by Boyce Lundstrom, Daniel Schwoerer, Kathleen Lundstrom	This volume is a must for beginners and a great adjunct for the experienced glass worker. It has a wealth of information covering tools, compatibility testing, annealing, glass qualities, kiln and kiln preparating, sagging, slumping, fusing, cutting, grinding and polishing. Chihuly Projects by Dale Chihuly, Barbara Rose, Dale Martin Lanzone	*Amazon.com* Voluptuous shapes in luscious color, Dale Chihuly's large-scale glass sculptures are all about immediate sensory experience. It's likely no book could capture the intoxication of being in the presence of clusters of glass forms that look like undersea life or tropical forests, hanging overhead or rising up from the floor in fabulous splendor. Chihuly Projects offers 200 full-page photographs (in supersaturated color) of 34 installations the Seattle artist created over a 30-year span for public and private clients, plus chatty comments by the artist and members of his staff. A fine essay by the art writer Barbara Rose places Chihuly's work in the context of contemporary art and his own life. (An eye injury in the mid-'70s precipitated his shift from blowing individual tabletop glass pieces to becoming the director of a team effort.) But the photographs tend to flatten out Chihuly's generous shapes, and the real-world settings of the sculptures are often so busy visually that, seen from the fixed vantage point of a still photo, they compete distractingly with the art. Although some pieces are shown in different stages of completion, it's hard to grasp how any given project actually comes together from start to finish.
